Loudoun County, VA- Step-up with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) and become an everyday hero! The LCSO’s ‘Be A Hero’ initiative continues to boost recruitment and retain the best employees through a continuous STEP-Up strategy of improving service, technology, efficiency and professionalism.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is the largest full-service sheriff’s office in the Commonwealth of Virginia, employing approximately 750 personnel (582 sworn and over 160 civilian positions). Responsibilities include the divisions of Patrol, Investigations, Operational Support, Courts and Corrections, and Administration and Technology.

Historically, the LCSO has experienced a low rate of attrition, 8% or less on average – significantly lower than the County as a whole. Deputies leave the department for a variety of reasons including retirements, opportunities with federal agencies or other departments, or for other personal reasons. Some leave the LCSO only to return (two within the past six months). Regardless, the LCSO currently has 35 applicants slated for its 48 currently open deputy billets. With a recently improved retirement multiplier, the LCSO believes additional deputy positions will become available in the near future. Consequently, the LCSO is always looking for good candidates to fill its ranks!

Although the attrition numbers remain stable, what has changed is the LCSO’s improved recruitment and retention strategy. Four years ago, the LCSO obtained night differential for its deputies. Within the past year, the LCSO has accomplished the following:

• Increased the retirement system multiplier that is competitive with surrounding jurisdictions (1.7% to 1.85%)
• Paid over $400,000 in award incentives • Promoted over 58 employees to supervisory/leadership ranks
• Enhanced career development opportunities through temporary and permanent assignments• Engaged with the County in an agency wide re-classification and compensation study to upgrade both sworn and civilian positions
• Worked with the County and the Board of Supervisors to ensure that all LCSO employees receive an equivalent annual raise• Achieved reclassification and pay band upgrades for many civilian staff employees
• Encouraged all employees to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees, and specialized education through county tuition reimbursements• Initiated goal for all deputies to be Crisis Intervention Team trained and certified
• Mandated, provided and funded leadership training for all newly promoted supervisors

Additionally, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is committed to providing the best equipment to agency personnel. The LCSO just completed an upgrade of its records management system, and the computer aided dispatch system. LCSO employees and the community also have access to state-of-the-art facilities in Leesburg, Eastern Loudoun and Dulles South. A third station is anticipated to open later this month in Western Loudoun and a fourth station is under construction in Ashburn. To ensure safety, service, efficiency and transparency, LCSO sworn personnel are also equipped with:

• Body Worn Cameras• Naloxone (to combat drug overdoses)
• New Dodge Chargers, with complete police packages• Vest carriers, Tasers, semi-automatic handguns and long rifles
• Take Home Cruisers (For Sworn Staff Residing in Loudoun County)

To fulfill the LCSO’s aggressive hiring initiative, the LCSO has modified its hiring process and expanded its Employee Services’ Section (ESS) by increasing our number of background investigators. These actions will streamline and expedite the hiring process to more rapidly fill existing vacancies. This process has been further augmented as new recruits are now attending simultaneous training academies; one for corrections and one for patrol. This duel academy process will continue into January 2017.

LCSO recruiters are also actively working with the multicultural community in our region to continue to diversify our ranks to better reflect the community we serve. Recently, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office developed a proactive recruitment drive as part of this extensive outreach program. This program includes a 4-week radio ad campaign with WPGC- 95.5 FM; additional advertising, an appearance on the station’s local public interest program, and a digital (email) campaign.

ESS personnel alongside the Supplemental Recruitment Unit continue to attend local and regional community events and career fairs. You can meet with deputies at three events in the next few weeks. Residents and students at Radford University are encouraged to meet with recruiters at the Radford University Career Fair on October 5, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents and students at Prince Georges Community College are encouraged to meet with recruiters at the Prince Georges Community College Job Fair and Expo beginning at 10 a.m. on October 12, 2016. Residents in the Washington, DC-Metropolitan area are also invited to speak with LCSO recruiters at the 17th Annual For Sisters Only event at The Washington Convention Center on November 5, 2016.
